Cork Week 06 in Arthaven

Come join the Art Crew in Arthaven for an unforgettable gallery experience shore side. With an abundance of eclectic art work from Painting to ceramic, from Print to Exclusive Nautical Charts, accommodating all budgets and tastes. Work by Susanne Leutenegger, John Jermyn, Kerry Collins, Sheena Jolley, Anthony Ruby, Ray Murphy, Charles Mountjoy, Pat Barry, John Kingerlee, Tony Klitz to mention but a few. In addition we are delighted to also present to a short concert series.

Lunchtime Concert on Wednesday 19th July @ 1315hrs

Aye! Aye! Hifilutin a flute quartet by nature, appear as a trio in Cork Week 06 in the absence of their antipodean member. The three remaining Celts look forward to an hour of music making, playing tunes spanning four centuries. Sandwiched between German Baroque and Latin American numbers, two substantial fillers from 19th Century and 20th Century Europe make up this lunchtime concert, with a sprinkling of popular favourites for afters.

Thursday 20th July @ 1800hrs

"My love is a Tall Ship"; Jimmy Crowley is an Irish traditional folk singer and musician from fair Cork City in the Republic of Ireland. No-one sounds like Jimmy, and few can match him for the humour, joy, tenderness and sheer storytelling craft which he brings to his repertoire of songs.

Jimmy has been travelling the world as a professional musician since 1977. He has been involved in an ongoing process of ethnography, collecting songs and ballads from Cork and elsewhere. Jimmy is a keen sailor with a great love of the sea and in 1994 he released an album on Dino Records called 'My Love Is A Tall Ship',which included the title song which was to honour the Tall Ships visit to Cork and a tribute to President Robinson called 'Mrs President'.

He is a fine self-accompanist on bouzouki and mandolin. A former member of the band Stokers Lodge, he has formed magical musical associations with many of Ireland's folk greats such as Michael O'Domhnaill of the Bothy Band, Joe Burke, Jackie Daly, Donal Lunny and Mick Moloney.

"He is a consummate stage performer as well as a song writer, adding colour to his songs by weaving stories about Cork characters, maritime exploits and daily life into his act. His singing style is truly unique - nobody hearing Jimmy could possibly mistake him for anyone else.”

Appreciation for "Hughie"

Our sincere thanks to the cast and crew of "Hughie" for the wonderful performance which took plalce in Arthaven Gallery on Friday last, the 30th of June. In particular, special mention must be given to Ber Power, who brought Eugene O' Neill's character, Hughie, to life and was suberbly executed, and to John Roche, whose role as the dozy night clerk was marvellous.

Once again, the gallery was transformed, this time into a vertible theatre. The encouragement, dedication and support of our audience is of course crucial to the success of any event, and this was no exception. We are most appreciative of the on-going and new support which Arthaven receives.

So keep you see peeled, and brace yourselves for an eventful Cork. Watch this space!

About the play
The time of ''Hughie'' is 1928, and the place is the lobby of a small, once respectable second-rate hotel on a West Side street in midtown Manhattan. The place is now only slightly better than a flophouse. In the late hours of a very long night, Erie Smith (Ber Power), a failed Broadway sport, gambler and horse player, bends the ear of the uninterested night clerk (John Roche). Erie is just coming off a five-day drunk triggered, he says, by the funeral of the previous night clerk, Hughie.

About Eugene O' Neill
One of the greatest American playwrights, restless and bold experimenter, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1936. Among O'Neill's best-known plays are ANNA CHRISTINE (pub. 1922), DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS (pub.1924), MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA (pub. 1931), LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (pub. 1956), and THE ICEMAN COMETH (prod. 1946). O'Neill's plays range in style from satire to tragedy. They often depict people who have no hope of controlling their destinies.

Curiously, Al Pacino played the lead role of Erie Smith to huge critical acclaim in New York, San Francisco, and LA in the late 90's.

The Polskadots are back!

Friday next, the 7th July @ 8pm, we are delighted to welcome the wonderful sounds of The Polskadots to Arthaven, back to fill our walls with their signature blend of world rhythms from Bulgaria, Russia, South America, Turkey and Scandinavia, The Polskadots deliver a dynamic and rich combination of powerful instrumentals on fiddle, box, mandolin and percussion, interspersed with soulful Eastern European songs. What emerges from this lively consortium of musical talent is an energetic journey which charts its way through far off, colourful, and alluring lands.

Based in Cork, they have been drawing the masses of serious music enthusiasts to The Tiki Lounge most Tuesdays since their formation last year where a captive and riveted audience crowd in and move with the Polskadot’s wagon.

They have just cut their 1st demo which will help then take their music further a field. The band members are…Marja, fiddle... Pia, accordion... George,mandolin... Cat, drum, egg and vocals Eileen, guitar/vocals and a bit of drum.

Dance: Infallible Muse II

DANCE PERFORMANCE AT ART HAVEN
Arthaven are pleased to host an extract from “Infallible Muse II", the latest piece from Crux Dance Theatre, in the Gallery @ 8pm on Friday 23rd June.

“Infallible Muse”, a very different and dynamic project that has been made possible through funding from The Arts Council, Cork City Council and Cork County Council.

This piece is a re working and development of the 2004 creation from renowned choreographer Jane Kellaghan. Close work with her chosen mentor, the acclaimed Sol Pico, director of the Sol Pico dance company, Barcelona, has pushed the boundaries of her choreography.

Infallible Muse explores the notion of free spirit and the many layers that we are forced to cloak ourselves with as society demands. It will contain scenes of full nudity, and has been described as “aesthetically satisfying…with skilled dancing” (Irish Times 30th September 2004); The piece is a sensuously exciting journey integrating culture and nature through the magic of multimedia, stunning lighting and set design. Its strength speaks though the body; this is the authentic voice of the dancer.

Hearty Congolese music by Motema

Arthaven are delighted to present

Motema, meaning the heart in Lingala, one of the many languages spoken in The Congo, are a Cork-based trio who have been rocking the foundations of Cork’s inner core for quite a few years now. Playing regularly in the Sin E, The Tiki Lounge and other diverse venues and festivals around the country, they bring with them the great traditions of Soukous/ Rumba music.

Soukous, originally from The Congo and a musical evolution of Rumba, has been described variously as “joyful hopeful music”, “buoyant”, “danceable, and energetic enough to cure the blues on the darkest of days”. True to this description, Motema generously deliver a hearty dose of tempo-tastic rhythms, so infectious you can’t help but smile from the inside out!

Ger Kieran: Vast Spaces

“Vast Spaces” is the inspired title of this exhibition of paintings by Geraldine Kieran. The work reflects the artist’s very personal response to her surroundings of the countryside and waters of West Cork and Kinsale. Geraldine responds to the stimuli of colour, form and space which give these paintings their impression of simplicity and quietness. These are expressive works, painted with energy in a loose, painterly fashion, conveying to the viewer feelings of solace and escape.

As luck would have it, Christmas 2005, four fabulous female flautists fell into each other’s company. Over coffee and croissants an animated conversation took place and the flute quartet Hifilutin was formed.


The four have performed as individuals across the globe, freelancing with major orchestras and ensembles, including appearances at The Edinburgh and Salzburg Festivals whilst fulfilling busy schedules as soloists throughout their native countries of Australia, Scotland and Ireland.


This truly international combination of enthusiastic professionals is reflected in the wide-ranging repertoire offered by “Hifilutin”, from medieval to modern, from the classic to the unexpected.

The programme will include:

Vivaldi's Spring, Gershwin, Telemann, Beethoven and many other novelties for Flute!

Performance will take place in the gallery on Friday 7th April @ 8pm

April 2006: Brendan Butler

"inscape"

"Drawing, Painting and Art itself has been a hugely significant part of my life from an early age and plays an integral part of who I am as a person."
In 2001 a young graduate of The Crawford College of Art & Design began a remarkable and deeply personal journey through the palette. Motivated from a compulsion to create images that explore the imagined landscapes of Ireland and beyond, Brendan Butler has spent the last number of years tenaciously refining a personal thesis that now culminates in this extraordinary collection of work. Butler’s total immersion in his practise over the years has brought with it a maturity and confidence rarely seen in such a young artist. Arthaven is delighted to unveil, for the first time, the work of Brendan Butler.

Biography
Born in Waterford, Brendan Butler graduated from The Crawford College of Art & Design in 2001. He was the happy recipient of the Back Water Art bursary prize in 2001. Among others his work has been selected for The Opera House and Imperial Hotel Private Collections. He has participated in numerous group shows, and has continued a remarkably prolific practice since graduating from Art College.

March 2006: Eileen Healy Exhibition

About the Artist…

“Drawing from life is the backbone of my work. As an artist it is essential to my process."

Eileen Healy is predominantly a figurative artist who works mainly in pastel and oil. The paintings she creates are very direct and honest portraits of people who sit for her in her studio.
"I really enjoy working from life. I am attracted to the immediacy and freshness of recreating on paper or board what is in front of me. I work with models who provide me with an opportunity to express my artistic language through them".
In her portraits she depicts people from all walks of life and cultures simply seated in a chair or standing. Some drawings are full length portraits, a new departure for her.
For many years Eileen has been a strong believer in the practice of drawing from the nude and some fine examples are included in this show.Eileen has exhibited her work through Ireland and abroad both in solo exhibitions and several selected shows.
She is also a part time drawing tutor at the Crawford College, Cork.

So too are the local artists whose dedication to Arthaven means to gladen the coming seasons with an eclectic bloom of work by Sean Mc Sweeney, Bill Griffin, Tony O' Malley, Neil Shawcross, John Jermyn, Susanne Leutenegger and Kerry Collins... for starters.

About The Art Haven Co-operative

Arthaven Gallery is a cooperative. At present the Co-op consists of three local professional artists, and a fourth member who facilitates financial arrangements and business expertise.

Our aim is to build and sustain a creative environment in the town of Crosshaven which promotes the sale of high quality visual art from local and emerging artists. Art Haven aims to act as a crucible where artists can be afforded the opportunity to exhibit their work in an artist- run, artist friendly environment. At its heart, Arthaven aspires to reflect best commercial gallery practise, whilst not inhibiting the encouragement of and development of artist creativity.

In addition, Arthaven intends to incorporate a cultural dimension in the pursuit of developing Crosshaven’s artistic identity. Its activities, such as musical nights, adult art classes, and cooperation with the local schools for talks and projects, seek to achieve artistic awareness and interest in the Arts within the community.
