Niall Connolly kicks off a month long European tour at Arthaven on May 4th. He will be accompanied on the night by multi instrumentalist, producer and long time collaborator, Karl Nesbitt.

Niall Connolly is widely regarded among his peers as one of Ireland's most promising young songwriters. His debut album 'Songs from a Corner' (2001) went to number one in the Hot Press indie charts and helped Connolly build a loyal fan base in Ireland as well as affording him the opportunity to tour Britain and mainland Europe. His follow up 'as tomorrow creeps from the east' (2003) opened further doors and brought him to North America for three tours. Niall's music has already received airplay in Ireland, New York, Toronto and Sydney. 'As tomorrow creeps from the east' has also bizarrely recorded internet sales in as yet untoured territories including Japan and New Zealand. Niall is currently completing work on his third collection The Future Tense.

Colin first played Classical Guitar at the age of eighteen with his first teacher, Jerry Creedon. This led to his entrance into the Degree course in the Cork School of Music later that year where Colin excelled in the art of performance.

In 1998, and again in 1999, he won the Feis Matthew cup for solo guitar performance. In his final year in the Cork School of Music (2002) Colin was the first guitarist to win the Cork School of Music Senior Recital.

During his time on the Degree course he studied with various guitarists and received many master classes from some of the worlds’ greatest guitarists such as Fabio Zanon, Paul Gregory, David Leisner, Magnus Anderson and Craig Ogden.

In 2002 Colin decided to take a year out and reform his technique. For this reason he travelled to London during this year to study with the Brazilian Virtuoso Fabio Zanon. Under the supervision of Zanon, Colin completed a Masters in performance over the following two years.

Colin is currently studying with the German Master Tilman Hoppstock and is performing around Ireland.

Colin has a large repertoire which spans from the Latin romantic pieces to the popular Classics. Influenced by his internationally renowned former mentor Fabio Zanon, plays a large selection of South American Dances such as Tangos, Milongas, Rumbas and Venezuelan Waltz’s, from such composers as Piazzolla, Gonzaga and Lauro.

This style of music is complemented with a variety of classic Italian and Spanish works from the 19th century, a time when the romantic lyricism of the guitar encouraged composers to write some of the most beautiful works for the instrument.

A visual essay on the relationship between man and the Earth

Baraka (1992) is an experimental documentary film directed by Ron Fricke, cinematographer for Koyaanisqatsi, the first of the Qatsi films by Godfrey Reggio. The title Baraka is a word that means blessing in many different languages. The score provided by Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard (from Dead Can Dance) and Michael Stearns. Baraka's subject matter includes footage of various landscapes, churches, ruins, religious ceremonies, and cities thrumming with life, filmed using time-lapse photography in order to capture the great pulse of humanity as it flocks and swarms in daily activity. The film also features a number of long tracking shots through various settings, including one through former concentration camps in Europe and Tuol Sleng (in Cambodia) turned into museums honoring their victims: over photos of the people involved, past skulls stacked in a room, to a spread of bones. The movie was filmed in 70 mm Todd-AO in 24 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Nepal, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States. It contains no dialogue. Instead of a linear plot, the film uses themes to present new perspectives and evoke emotion. A sequel to Baraka, Samsara, is currently in production and expected to be released in 2007.

Beyond the Pale is an exciting new ensemble founded by four Cork-based musicians who specialise in the performance of Baroque music. Boasting a wealth of performance experience in Ireland and abroad, each of the four musicians brings to the group a distinctive approach to historically-informed interpretation of the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. With a collaborative approach to the music of this period, they produce a vibrant musical sound which is faithful to the musical styles of the time.

The programme will include music by Ireland-based composer Geminiani and other (baroque) music popular in Ireland at the time, like Corelli and Handel, plus unique arrangements of O'Carolan tunes and other traditional stuff, all on period instruments.

Together, these four musicians make Beyond the Pale an exciting addition to the chamber music scene in Ireland.

Beyond the Pale are: Marja Tuhkanen (Baroque Violin), Conor O’Connell (Recorders), Ilse de Ziah (Cello) and James Taylor (Harpsichord).

Singing Sisters, Leah and Chloe like a good bit of hootenanny and hoedowns that tickle the gizzards way down to their sultry inner depths...little bit of good boot stompin' fiddle banjo/tunes passed down from many a mountain hobo...

Leah and Chloe grew up in the bosom of the Southern Appalachian music renaissance. Born to a fiddlin' mother and a folk-sculptor father, they were raised with old-time melodies and contra dances as their lullabies long before mention of the sound tracks of Oh Brother Where Art Thou and Cold Mountain. With influences in everything from urban jazz and hip hop, to roots music from around the world, they have created a style that is truly their own. Now, as young women, they have coddled that same Appalachian tradition, and continued to shape it and help it grow through music and song. Their simple eerie banjo and fiddle tunes and effortless sister harmonies are compared to that of Hazel Dickens, Rosetta Tharpe and Gillian Welch. Having recently cut their debut self-titled album, Rising Appalachia, please join them in taking the world of music by storm! The more boot stompin' the merrier! Wooo Hooo!"

3 Artists: I Art Haven

The Members Show
November 9th to November 23rd 2006

The founding members of Arthaven Gallery, Crosshaven, artists Kerry Collins, John Jermyn and Susanne Leutenegger will present a showcase of their work, opening on November 9th. This creative trio have provided exhibition and performance space for many artists during the last 16 months are now taking the time to exhibit their own work. These three artists, the creative backbone of Art Haven, each have their own distinct style. Nora Hickey, Curator of Education & Collections at The Lewis Glucksman Gallery will officially open the Exhibition @ 7.30pm.

The sea and the associated elements of it are John Jermyn’s principal source of inspiration. Living in Fennells Bay means that he has direct and constant exposure to the tides and movement of water that are so central to his painting. As he puts it “It is one thing to look at a wave but it is quite another to get inside it”. Tranquil shorelines or raging waters all come under his brush. With a Diploma from London Art College and as a practising Landscape Architect, John has a deep understanding of this environment. Following a sell out exhibition of his work in Bandon this year John is now in preparation for the November 9th exhibition.

Susanne Leutenegger, originally from Switzerland but now living in Fennells Bay with her family, creatively paints a newly invented portrayal of plant life. She achieves this by using drawing and unusual mixes of colour, powerful combinations of greens and oranges, dark purples and shades of turquoise. Her abstract looking constructions are at once solid and monumental and yet also soft and fragile. Susanne finished her studies at the Crawford with Distinction and her workis found in Collections in Ireland (Collection of UCC),Switzerland, Germany, and of course, in Arthaven in Crosshaven.

The third vertebra in this backbone is Kerry Collins, a Crawford Graduate, recently moved to Crosshaven. An extremely prolific painter, Kerry describes her work as a visual diary of her life.” My focus is predominantly people but out on the water at Cork week I found myself fascinated by the beautiful shapes and colours there”. A recent commission of 4ft by 3ft portrait of Douglas Hyde, Ireland’s first president, will also be exhibited. Kerry promises that “her work at this exhibition will be very varied.”

The Wonderful World of Joachim Beug: Project 94

“Take a photograph every day for one whole year”, that,in short is what “Project 94” was about.

Carrying out what started as a New Year resolution proved to be demanding, frustrating, enriching, complex and sometimes upsetting. The world around, near and far, was turning into motifs demanding to be framed. Contentions of seeing, laws of composition, artistic rules soon began to seem exhausted and confusing and demanded to be broken. Creative energies had to be found when these seemed to be none. On occasion I just grabbed the camera, turned my eyes away, pointed in some random direction and pushed the button. On other, inspired days half a roll of film was shot with great concentration.

The result: a considerable number of pictures. A selection of those was collected in scrap books which provide a record of the project.

On view here are a few images which should be strong enough to stand on their own and an impression of the range of motifs, intentions and realizations. Instead of titles the images are identified by their ‘date of birth’.

These limited edition photographs will be exhibited until November 7th.

THE DATE BROTHERS

Ian and Nigel Date are coming to Crosshaven for a special performance as part of their 2006 world tour that has seen them travel from Ireland to Australia. They have been a huge hit at international jazz festivals and concerts. They are also the top billing at the Manouche Gypsy Jazz Festival to be held in Brisbane on the weekend of the 18th and 19th November in Australia.

Ian Date has long been regarded as one of Australia’s great guitar players. Ian has played all over the world making numerous television, radio, festival and concert hall performances. He has shared the stage with many great musicians including Benny Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Martin Taylor, Don Burrows, Fapy Lafertin, Tom Baker and James Morrison.

Critics have described his playing as masterful, lyrical and always melodic.

Since 2002 he has lived in County Cork, Ireland. Ian produces and arranges music for film, records and performs regularly throughout the Emerald Isle and Europe. He has also been commissioned to write an opera for the 2007 season in Cork.

Younger brother Nigel is based in Sydney and works as a freelance guitarist. He has been involved in numerous jazz and other music ensembles throughout Australia in recent years. These include The Straight Back Fellows, Peppermint T, Glass, George Washingmachine and the String Band, The Jews Brothers, Neil Duncan’s The Ticklers and many more.

Together the brothers play the Gypsy Jazz style created by Django Reinhardt, the legendary Gypsy guitarist of France in the 1930’s. They also play a lot more besides. The music of New Orleans, classic jazz, blues, latin and Irish.

The Date Brothers will thrill with dazzling guitar and will take you on a musical journey.

It is easy to see from the work of Margaret O’Sullivan that she really has an affinity with the sea. She manages to capture its atmosphere so effectively that when looking at the work it is as if you can hear the waves and feel the tension of the swell under water. Even in some of her tiny paintings the pull of the tide is tangible. She is a regular exhibitor with the Paul Kane gallery in Dublin and at the Lavit gallery, Cork.

Margaret O’Sullivan attended the Crawford College of Art as a mature student and qualified with an honours degree in Fine Art in 1993. She also received a diploma in the History of Art at University College Cork in 2002.

Her work is informed by nature and the forces within nature. She works in situ in a variety of landscapes such as Allihies in West Cork, Cloghroe, Co. Cork, Achill Island, Co. Mayo. She also spends time working in Crete, Greece at regular intervals. She has recently returned to Cork, having spent a year working and living on Achill Island.

Niwel Tsumbu Duo

Niwel is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (ex Zaire) and has been living in Ireland since 2004. Growing up in Kinshasa he was a shy boy and devoted himself to school, until one day when he was sixteen, his brother Coco Ngoma brought a guitar home...school work went out the window and the guitar took over.

Niwel's love and passion for different kinds of music is evident in his explorations of Jazz fusion, influenced by the rhythmic beats of Congolese rumba and soukous, but Tsumbu is not one to be confined to any one genre, dipping comfortably in and out of jazz, classical guitar, blues, rock and reggae styles.

Since moving to Ireland, Niwel quickly made friends with the Irish music scene. He began playing with many local bands and formed the groups Sumu, Jazzmu and Motema.He has played on many stages- from diversity, cultural awareness and charity gigs- to both the Cork and Bray Jazz Festivals, the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire 2005, and the Spiegeltent for the last two years in Cork. Niwel has supported the likes of Kila, The Wailers, Horace Andy from Massive Attack, and Cameroon virtuoso bass player Richard Bono as part of the Bulmers World Music Festival in Cork. He is set to play the Ruby Session in August.

The Niwel Tsumbu Duo sees him working with Cork percussionist Eamonn Cagney, forming an extremely tight-knit unit and charismatic duo, with Cagney’s strong sensitivity to the subtleties of Tsumbu’s rhythmic patterns allowing for the creation of exciting rhythmic surprises and tensions in the music.

Thanks to the performers and attendees who participated in what was a fullsome and totally entertaining night in R.C.Y.C on Friday last.

Katrina Emtage (flute) and Ilse de Ziah (cello) opened the night, setting the scene with the sound mosaic that looped flute to cello and back again. Featuring their own compositions and a sprinkling of music from comtemporary composers (Ian Clarke's The Great Train) and the Irish Tradition, this duo introduced sounds to a suitably wowed audience that are not often, if ever, heard in these parts.

Local guitarist and songster Dave Power pressed the night forward with a very fluent and poetic landscape of his own songs. Taken along with the travelling gypsy and the disappointing prophecies of her "Crystal Ball" to the fantasies of being "Someone Different", the eloquently delivered and rhythmically sound tales of song made for a thoughtful journey, at times heart felt, at times hilarious, altogether an extremely satisfying listen.

The Be Naturals pizzazz was not to be stopped! A flawless and energetic performance whose tonal centre was impressively and consistently strong. Their repetoire was richly rounded with fun, spice and chic and the audience couldn't get enough of them! Their generous encores were received by a standing ovation and uproarious applause- and proper order too.

Arthaven would like to sincerely thank RCYC for generously providing us with a wonderful venue at such short notice. Admiral Hugh Mockler joked that the Yacht Club had never seen such culture which we were happy to provide.

Australian Duo Katrina Emtage & Ilse de Ziah; flute & cello both studied at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney before moving on to study in Vienna and London. A stroke of fate then found both settled in Cork. With considerable experience as solo, chamber and orchestral musicians they have toured all over the world and played in festivals such as the Salzburg Festival and more recently for Cork 2005. They will present some of their own compositions and arrangements for flute/s and cello.

David Power; jazz guitar recently returned to his native Crosshaven, after eighteen years in Australia, David Power has been busy sowing the seeds of song which now, on Irish soil, find their voice. With acoustic guitar and voice, an electic blend of jazz, folk and a sprinkle of 'comedy song', rumours of late have suggested that audiences have been suitably wowed by this seasoned traveller!

Be Natural; ladies a cappella quartet perform a variety of jazz, blues and popular music in four- part unaccompanied vocal harmony. The quartet are based in Cork and have been singing together for the last 6 years. The line up consists of Deirdre O'Connell (baritone), Amy Mockler (bass), Sharon Ryan (lead) and Susie Maye (tenor).
